Microsoft created AI more powerful than GPT-5.6 while spending 4 times fewer resources
This statement was made by Mustafa Suleyman, head of Microsoft's AI division

MAI-Base-2 was tested in comparison with OpenAI models, including Spud—the system that powers GPT-5.6. According to Suleyman, in tests for understanding and predicting patterns in data, Microsoft's development showed superior results.
He did not specify the exact DeepSeek models used for comparison. Microsoft's blog states that the pretraining of MAI-Base-2 proved significantly more efficient than that of DeepSeek-V4-Pro-Base.
Pretraining is the initial stage of AI model creation, during which it processes large datasets and identifies patterns within them. Suleyman took over Microsoft's AI division after the formation of a unified team responsible for both commercial and consumer versions of Copilot.
