Will microbes survive on the asteroid Apophis
Scientists plan to send biological samples to the surface of the celestial body during its close approach to Earth in April 2029

Lomonosov Moscow State University is considering the possibility of conducting an experiment on the asteroid Apophis. To this end, a landing module with a sealed cell containing microorganisms or spores may be sent to it. This was stated by Vladislav Osedlo, Deputy Director of the Skobeltsyn Institute of Nuclear Physics at Moscow State University.
The purpose of the study is to understand how biological objects endure the conditions of open space: vacuum, sharp temperature fluctuations, and radiation exposure. Scientists intend to analyze changes in their viability. Specialists in space physics, astrophysics, biology, and medicine will participate in the project.
Moscow State University has already conducted similar experiments in orbit. In December 2025, the satellite 'SINP MSU-80' was launched, where biological samples were tested. The new mission will allow going beyond near-Earth space.
Apophis is an asteroid with a diameter of about 350 meters, discovered in 2004. On April 13, 2029, it will approach Earth at a distance of 32,000 kilometers.
