OpenAI Plans to Purchase AI Chips from Google
The potential purchase comes as Amazon, Microsoft, and Alphabet plan to allocate $600 billion to AI infrastructure this year.

According to The Information, the implementation of this plan could bring OpenAI and Google closer, despite their competition in AI products and search. Last week, OpenAI announced access to its advanced models via Google Cloud.
OpenAI is already among the largest buyers of NVIDIA accelerators for training and operating AI models. In June 2025, it was reported that the company began renting Google’s computing power, though details about the types of chips were not disclosed at the time.
Google’s Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) have become an alternative to NVIDIA accelerators for market participants seeking more affordable solutions. This year, Google started selling processors directly to some clients, and deals with Anthropic have further boosted demand for them.
Google expects to recognize a small portion of revenue from TPU sales by the end of this year, while the bulk of the amount is planned for 2027. OpenAI is also developing its own semiconductor project: in June, the company unveiled a chip developed in collaboration with Broadcom and intends to deploy such solutions by the end of this year. According to available data, Oracle also plans to purchase Google’s TPUs.
