The partnerships will involve the California Institute of Technology, The Ohio State University College of Medicine, Louisiana State University, Indiana University, and UTHealth Houston. Researchers will also be able to use Meta’s mixed-reality glasses and headsets for medical projects.

At Louisiana State University, Michael Dunham’s team is developing the Eyes-On system for continuous monitoring of tracheostomy tube displacement and signs of deterioration in infants. The project explores the use of open-weight SAM models connected to bedside cameras and edge computing systems; its concept has already been published.

At Indiana University, David Crandall is researching the application of multimodal AI for analyzing conversations with elderly individuals living with dementia. At The Ohio State University College of Medicine, Yuan Xue, along with cardiologist Yuchi Han and researcher Xia Ning, is studying whether Meta’s models can preemptively assess the risk of heart failure using abdominal CT scans, medical records, and ECG data.
