According to company CEO Brian Niccol, the technology should help baristas take orders more accurately and quickly without distracting from customer interactions.

Starbucks plans to trial artificial intelligence at drive-thru locations. Niccol announced this during a discussion of quarterly results.

The AI will operate in the background and assist employees in entering orders more accurately and quickly. The company expects to reduce the workload on baristas and give them more opportunities to focus on conversations with customers.

According to Niccol, testing will begin in the 2027 fiscal year. For now, the discussion is about testing the technology, not rolling it out across the entire network.

Additionally, Starbucks is exploring the possibility of recognizing loyalty program members during service. This is another area of technological changes the company is considering for its coffee shops.
