How Long Does an Apple TV Last and When Is It Time to Replace It

Older models received updates for up to ten years. However, Apple does not promise such a timeline for the new set-top box.

The new fourth-generation Apple TV 4K will go on sale on November 13 for $299 in the U.S. It features an A19 processor, an updated Siri Remote, and built-in microphones for voice control without the remote. However, owners of previous models do not necessarily need to prepare for a replacement: the useful lifespan of the set-top box depends primarily on the performance of the required applications.

Apple does not publicly set a fixed number of years for tvOS updates for each model. Judgments can be made based on the company's past experience. The Apple TV HD, introduced in 2015, received tvOS 26 in 2025—approximately ten years after its release. The first Apple TV 4K, released in 2017, supported major updates for about eight years.

In July 2026, both models also received tvOS 26.6 with security fixes. However, the tvOS 27 released in September supports only the second-generation Apple TV 4K and newer devices.

The end of major updates does not mean the device is broken

The set-top box does not stop playing video just because it no longer supports the latest system version. For example, Netflix continues to list the Apple TV HD and the first Apple TV 4K among supported devices.

Over time, the situation may change: developers raise minimum system requirements, causing older models to lose the ability to install or update certain applications.

Therefore, it is worth focusing on specific issues. Replacement becomes more justified if the menu lags noticeably, applications regularly crash, or a required service stops supporting the device. The availability of security fixes should also be considered, especially when using the set-top box as a smart home hub.

New features do not always require a new set-top box

According to Apple, the Siri AI beta is intended for the second-generation Apple TV 4K and newer, provided the requirements for a linked iPhone or iPad are met. Availability depends on language and region. Thus, not everyone needs to buy the 2026 model just for the updated assistant.

Meanwhile, the new version has its own hardware advantages: the A19 processor and microphones for addressing Siri without pressing a button on the remote.

A lost or broken remote also does not require replacing the entire set-top box. Apple TV can be controlled with an iPhone, and a new Siri Remote is sold separately and is compatible even with the Apple TV HD.

The update history shows that set-top boxes can remain useful for many years. However, one cannot rely on a guaranteed eight or ten years of support for the new model: Apple has not announced such a commitment.
