Nexus Mods will require authors to explain AI use in mods

The platform is introducing mandatory disclosure of AI use when uploading new modifications and making the labeling more prominent. Nexus Mods does not plan to completely ban generated content

Nexus Mods is updating the rules for publishing game modifications. When uploading a new mod, the author must indicate whether artificial intelligence was used. For works marked 'created with AI,' a public explanation of where and how such tools were applied will be required.

According to the platform's owner, Victor Folmann, users lack clear information about the origin of the content. Therefore, existing AI labels will become more noticeable on mod pages.

The platform has rejected a complete ban. The administration explains this by the wide range of technology applications—from assisting in code writing to generating textures, voices, and other game materials. Nexus Mods prefers to require transparency rather than create an incentive to hide AI use.

For players, the platform is also introducing the ability to hide generated content on game pages and the main page. Later, similar settings should appear in search.

Separately, the administration stated that it will not use uploaded mods for AI training, sell them, or provide licenses to companies for such purposes.

Authors of existing modifications have been given a transition period until January 2, 2027, to comply with the new requirements. The basic obligation to disclose AI use was in effect previously. After the transition period ends, violations will be referred to moderators: initially, authors will be asked to correct the information, and further non-compliance may result in restrictions and content removal.
