From Claude Code to OpenAI: Kat Wu Moves to Anthropic’s Top Competitor
Former head of product development for Claude Code will lead product management in OpenAI’s Core Products team. The company confirmed her appointment to Business Insider.

Kat Wu, who was responsible for product development of Claude Code at Anthropic, is moving to OpenAI. She announced her new position on the social network X.
At OpenAI, Wu will lead product management in the Core Products division. According to the company’s comment to Business Insider, she will work with Nick Turley on enterprise products and Ashley Alexander on consumer products. Her supervisor will be Thibaut Soutter.
At Anthropic, Wu was involved in transforming Claude Code from an internal prototype into a commercial tool for software development. She also regularly communicated with users and presented the product’s capabilities.
In her announcement about the transition, Wu highlighted OpenAI’s vast audience and her intention to work on agents that assist users and teams while keeping humans in control of the system’s actions.
The appointment comes amid competition between Claude Code and Codex—tools that allow AI to handle programming tasks. However, Wu’s new role is within OpenAI’s core products team: the company has not announced that she will become a separate head of Codex.
The reasons for leaving Anthropic were not disclosed in detail. Wu stated that the opportunity to sell her shares earlier was not a factor in her decision.
