In a podcast, Altman questioned the necessity of running AI models on home computers. According to him, from the perspective of global resource distribution, it is better to direct limited supplies of dynamic memory to data centers rather than leaving them in personal devices.

These remarks sparked a sharp reaction, particularly among PC enthusiasts. They link the rising cost of components to high demand from the AI industry. Later, Altman wrote on X that his statement was taken out of context and stated: he has long advocated for increasing memory production.

In response to another user, he added that he wants to provide people with larger amounts of RAM and urged to 'produce more.' This position contradicts his earlier comment about the inefficiency of storing memory in users' computers.

The situation arose amid issues surrounding data centers and a shortage of microchips. For the industry, expanding memory supplies remains a challenging task: experts warn that disruptions in the global chip market may continue for many more years. As one sign of the crisis, the article cites Intel's market value collapse—the largest single-day drop since 1974.
